Water and Creation

The Bible and water are very much connected. In fact water is mentioned over 700 times. The first time water is mentioned in the scripture is found in Genesis 1:2 - ''The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.''
Before there was light, the sun or moon, earth, plants, living creatures or anything else, there was water.

Having created the earth out of water, and the sky in the midst of waters, and calling forth living creatures out of water, God continues to shower his creation with water as a sign of His love.

The last time water is recorded in the Bible is in Revelations 22:17 - ''The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.''

From the beginning of the Bible to the end water flows through the Great Light of mankind. It is full of passages that link water to Gods creating, blessing and saving work. That alone shows to us the importance of water in God's plan for man.

  • Jesus, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.''
  • Ephesians 5:26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.
  • Isaiah 55:10-11 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
  • Hosea 6:3 Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.
  • Ezekiel 36:25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
  • Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
  • John 13:10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean...
  • Matthew 3:5,6,11 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River..."I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
  • Genesis 7:21-23 Every living thing that moved on the earth perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
  • And we see In John we see the blessing of healing.

John 9: 1-7 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?""Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
