Do you follow Lisa DuFault of Valley Promotions? I mention Lisa because I know her and I know of her love for her family, the people here and the Valley we share. She is authentic and emblematic of the spirit of this special place.
I have always known that we have not only good people here in our paradise but we have many, many great people as evidenced by the quick response of our business community to help others this week. I am repeating my opinion piece that was published in the Daily Sun last week. Why? Because it bears repeating and I just love the spirit of of the people on the eastern slope of Mount Washington - don't you?
FRYEBURG, Maine - I have been in and around the Mount Washington Valley, since 1966 skiing, camping, fishing and just plain recreating — I love it here. When I moved here with my family in 2005, I found that 99 percent of the people here are truly authentic.
I mention this because authenticity, in the way we run our businesses, in our small region is vitally important and being authentic is impossible without honesty and integrity in our lives. Especially if you are building your business or branding your product. The moral values and the way we live our lives will impact directly the outcomes in our businesses. We have exceptional people here, with exceptional values and work ethic.
If you think about taking a shortcut, and sacrificing your integrity, think again. If you think that these straight lines will somehow earn you more money, more success, more pleasure you are sadly mistaken. Aside from being self destructive, it is short term thinking at its worst. In the long term, violating trust with customers, clients, employees or even fooling yourself is the surest way to failure.
Why am I writing this letter? Because I want all the best for all of us in our valley. I want our little piece of heaven to always keep its edge. Your values and the meanings you attach to honesty and integrity can be different from mine, but regardless of how you define these values, I would strongly urge all of us in the business community to take a long hard look at how we conduct our business so that we can maintain our reputation as a great place to live, work and play.
I almost forgot. That 1 percent? They just remind us that it takes all kinds to make up this world, and they all further remind us that we all can do better....
