We will not create a healthy economy here in Fryeburg if our local 'chamber of commerce' - the Fryeburg Business Association, is not fully supported by Fryeburg's town government. That is just about as clear as I can state it.
Many in town were sorely disappointed that, #1 the town's administration wouldn't come out and enthusiastically support our 250th birthday celebration last summer. And #2 after the success of the 250th birthday party, the town didn't issue a public 'thank you'.
When I look about 14 miles east to Bridgton, that some call our 'sister town', I see action by both the town - especially Mitch Berkowitz, Town Manager and Anne Krieg, Economic Development Director to boost Bridgton to back to economic health. A lot of diligent work is being done there and it's really starting to show.
I also see the Town of Bridgton actively partnering with the Greater Bridgton Area Chamber of Commerce. Mitch and Anne have been to every chamber after hours that I've attended. Ken Murphy, newly elected to the Bridgton Board of Selectmen is the Bridgton Chamber president. Do you see the pattern here?
I propose that we in Fryeburg had better tell our town government to 'take a hint' and 'catch a clue' from our sister community, just a few miles down Rt. 302.
Fryeburg can heal itself economically but it takes active cooperation between the citizens, the business community and our town government - a cohesive, unified, and harmonious effort. Any other half-way methods will fail.
The town of Fryeburg, that I now call home, is special. The land and the river and its location are but more importantly it is all of you that truly make it special. You are Fryeburg and you are responsible for its health, its prosperity and its future.
The time is now to build a healthy economy and a vibrant welcoming Fryeburg. I believe that many of you do realize just how special this town is. I see it clearly and I will not stop trying to build a consensus so that we can move forward.
In conclusion, just a word about government, especially local government - we the people are the government. The servants of government can be reached at this number: 935-2805.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Let's flatter Bridgton.
