We're
Gearing Up for a Big Fight to Protect Your Right to Water in Maine
Contribute to this fight today and your donation will be tripled!
Dear
Mike,
We fought hard this year — and just a month ago, we had a huge victory for Mainers everywhere who want to keep water in public hands. We helped protect Fryeburg's water system by stopping a negotiation between Nestlé/ Poland Spring and the Fryeburg Water Company. If it had continued, this negotiation could have lead to a 25–45 year contract with Nestlé — meaning that a 10 year old in Fryeburg might not have had any say over his water until he was 55! We could not have won this important victory without your support, and the battle is not over yet — please donate to support our work, and a generous donor will triple your donation! It was close to a year ago that 150 people in the town of Fryeburg and surrounding areas stood outside in the cold February winter and packed the public hearing to have their voices heard in opposition to the Nestlé contract. Since then, community members and folks across the state have worked hard to oppose this contract. We were right next to them, providing legal support and organizing efforts to stop Nestlé in the most strategic ways we could. Supporters like you helped make the victory happen. We need your support to do more great things like this in 2014. In addition to our work to protect your water from Nestlé in Maine, this year we also worked to help pass the monumental Genetically Engineered Food Labeling bill, helped support the efforts of Anti-Tar Sands work in South Portland, and continued engaging youth through our Take Back the Tap campaign on campuses and schools. One of the biggest obstacles to protecting our food and water in 2014 is the immense spending power that our opposition has. Companies like Nestlé have the finances to pay for lawyers and media campaigns that mislead the general public. Your donation will help us better face these challenges by helping out with our lawyer fees as well as our own media campaigns and materials to help further educate people about why everyone deserves safe food and water. Donate today and help us face these challenges! As you may know, we don't take corporate donations — so we rely on individuals like you to do the work we do. Food & Water Watch supporters in Maine are some of my favorite people and motivate me to work hard to protect our food and water. I am inspired by our supporters and by my colleagues at Food & Water Watch every day. Thank you for your dedication and support.
