'The Biggest Dam Movie You Ever Saw.' Take an intimate swim with beavers and experience the rich aquatic habitat of one of nature's greatest engineers at 8 p.m. at the Appalachian Mountain Club Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. This film follows a family of beavers as they grow, play, and transform their world. The movie will be in the dining room. The program is free and open to the public. Sandwich Time Capsule. The Grand Finale of the year-long Sandwich 250th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for today at the Sandwich Central School on the Squam Lake Road. Town Moderator Lee Quimby, will be the Master of Ceremonies, which will start at 3 p.m. and will conclude at dusk with a festive fireworks display, bonfire on the Sandwich Fairgrounds, and church bells. In between, the highlights will be a multi-media presentation of the last century of life in Sandwich with voices, slides and movies from our past 100 years as compiled by Adam Nudd-Homeyer, director of the Sandwich Historical Society (SHS) and the SHS Staff; the contents of the "new" time capsule, which are to be opened in 2063 at the Town's 300th Anniversary, will be on display; a special guest for the 300th anniversary will be revealed; refreshments from local bakers will be served; and jazz pianist Jim Butka will entertain.
Artist of the Month Reception. There is an open reception at the Conway Public Library held by Ernest Brown, artist of the month for December from 2 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The public is invited. For more information call 447-5552.
Guided Snowshoe Tour. The Mount Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation will conduct a weekly guided snowshoe tour departing from the Touring Center every Saturday at 1 p.m(weather permitting). Travel gentle riverside terrain while learning the basic skills needed to enjoy this fun winter activity. Whether you are first time on snowshoes or just a refresher of basic skills, everyone will enjoy the views and opportunity to spot some animal tracks. Snowshoe rentals will be available at the Touring Center if needed. Reservations for the tour and an event pass, which includes the two hour guided tour and use of the network trails for a full day, are required. Christmas Bird Count. Tin Mountain Conservation Center will be carrying out the 25th annual North Conway Christmas Bird Count today. The success of this yearly winter bird census depends on a troop of devoted volunteers both on foot in the field and at home watching their feeders. All are invited to join in the efforts.The birds are counted in an area determined by a 15-mile diameter circle that encompasses parts of Jackson, Bartlett, Chatham and North Conway. Tin Mountain will compile the findings the evening of the count, and compare the numbers to data the center has collected over the past 24 years, begining at 5 p.m. at the Gibson Center in North Conway. Hot drinks and goodies will be provided as the group compiles the day's statistics. Snowshoe Hike. Loon Echo Land Trust will host a snowshoe hike on Pleasant Mountain's Bald Peak Trail at 9 a.m. Trekkers should meet at the Bald Peak trailhead on Mountain Road in Bridgton at 8:45 a.m. Parking alongside Mountain Road is limited, carpooling is encouraged. This will be a strenuous hike requiring proper winter clothing (no cotton), boots, fluids and food. Conditions may require snowshoes, traction devices, hiking poles and extra provisions. The first mile includes a 1,400-foot elevation gain with the round trip totaling three miles, taking approximately five hours. Time and conditions permitting, you will visit the Needles Eye waterfall, the Big Bald Peak and the Red Pine Woodland at the North Peak before descending via Sues Way Trail. In the event of heavy snow or extreme cold, the hike will be canceled. Bring your camera as there will be great photo opportunities.
