William Marvel: It should be no surprise to those who have been paying attention to the machinations of corporate interests in our community that Janice Crawford stands fully behind a transnational corporation’s efforts to control our local resources. As the effective secretary general of what many have begun to call the Mount Washington Valley Cartel, she seems to pop up just about anywhere commercial interests are trying to exert insidious control over our community.
When schoolchildren everywhere else are running free, but Conway’s kids are still trapped in those ineffective lessons of late spring, you could thank the influence of Janice Crawford — a Fryeburg resident who sits on SAU 9’s calendar committee. As a lobbyist for the tourist industry, she would defend the extra vacation during ski season, so local businesses can find enough cheap labor among students while Massachusetts schools are on vacation. In addition to needless cancellations for the weather, like that of last week, the superfluous February vacation helps drag school out nearly to the end of spring every year, and sometimes into the first days of summer.
